Served a summons with no court date?

I was served papers over an auto debt last week. We called the creditor's lawyer and agreed on payments, they said we would still have to go to court once over it but they never said when. do we still need to hire a lawyer enough though we handled it on our own? We have NEVER had this happen to us so we really don't know how to go about dealing with.
