Tried taking close up pictures with white background but always turn out grey? I'm using Canon 550D / rebel?

use spot metering and meter onto the subject, this will cause the background to become whiter and then use exposure compensation to increase the exposure and make the background brighter if you need to. Just remember to check white balance carefully and also you won't get the best results with such basic lighting unfortunately.
